5 years of us

Eight years ago I met this guy outside a music venue. He was the brother of the cello player of the band I was in at the time. He told me in a horribly thick southern accent that his name was Caleb and he's a mechanic and liked mountain climbing.
"Ew. Boring," I thought and I quickly scurried away from him in search of better people.
Two years after that we ran into each other at a gathering of friends at a coffee shop. I didn't pay much attention to him... in fact, I totally forgot that I had met him before.
In the days to come, this guy began to frequent the coffee shop I visited everyday after work.
He was stalking me.
Well, he asked his sister (my ex-roommate) about me and she told him where to find me.
We began to hang out outside on the patio of the coffee shop everyday, smoking cigarettes, sucking back black coffee for hours. We exchanged phone numbers and he would call me and preach two-hour long sermons to me about... ugh, who knows. Calvanism or something like that... I wasn't listening. I was just tickled pink that a guy was actually interested in me.
After I encouraged him to loosen up, stop being so formal and boring and stop preaching to me (that's NO way to woo a woman) we began to have fun - and after just three short weeks of dating, we knew...
We dated for a year and we were engaged just long enough to save up and plan a wedding - just five months. We were married in a private ceremony on May 8, 2010.
So here ya go.
Five years of us.
Enjoy!

Modern Colors Two: an illustrated explanation

Hello folks! I've started a spinoff blog for mom and kid stuff.
The original Modern Colors blog started off as a pregnancy style blog, but I had no style... so it became just a pregnancy blog. After the birth of my first child the blog became all about me since my baby did little more than just drool and poop. Not really blog-worthy.
Now I have two kiddos and I've found my self desiring more and more to blog about them and all sorts of fun kid stuff. I know many of you ladies out there either have no children or you have children who have long since left the nest so I highly doubt you all would be interested in reading about how to remove spit-up stains and the best cream for a chapped hiney.

January, 2012 - 9 months pregnant with River.

When I first started off blogging about pregnancy and baby stuff, quite naturally I followed other mom bloggers and to tell you the truth - it was a pretty boring journey. I mean, are 15 black and white photographs of your baby wearing cloth diapers really necessary? Biweekly posts about vegan toddler meals? A 4,000 word image-less post about teething?
Mom blogs tend to be the same blog over and over. They lure you in with promises of eclectic awesomeness - calling themselves, "groovy", "crunchy", "hippie" and "bohemian". When you get to their blogs, you find that they feel they're SO unique because they wear  $300 Anthropology dresses, cloth diaper their babies, use coconut oil and buy organic baby food.
Woopdee-friggin'-doo. Let's have a party.

So, I know it sounds like I have a low opinion of all mom bloggers. Not all of them. Just the boring ones.  I would like to jump back into the game and try my hand at giving mom blog readers something a little different. Surely there's a mom out there looking for tips on how to create a steampunk costume for a two year old - or tips on the best way to introduce your child to Tom Waits.

WARNING:
Yes, Modern Colors Two will have annoying ads.
Yes, it will also have product reviews and giveaways that force you to follow me on every form of social media ever made.
I need the money. I need the freebies. I need the... attention?
I love to blog and if I can do it to help support my family then by gum, that's what I'm going to do. BUT I'm going to do it in the most awesome way possible - always with humor, a dash of sarcasm and little bit'o this:
No,worries, I'll still blog here. I'm not going anywhere any time soon.
So, if you're interested in following Modern Colors Two just click on the image below and sniff it out.
THANKS!

babe ahoy!

Guess what folks!
I'm going to have baby!! Yes it's true! What's that? You already knew that? Oh.
Well did you know that I'm going to have a baby THIS SATURDAY?!?!?
Yay! I shore am!
At my last checkup I bumped up the date of my sea-section from September 11th to the 6th. I'm miserable and I feel like I've been pregnant for years. I'm so crabby all the time and I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired and I'm SO ready to meet my little girl.
Sailor Hat: Halloween clearance last year
Modern Kuchi tribal necklace, ring and bangles: eBay
Tank: Old Navy clearance rack
Skirt: Old, retail
Shoes: Local beauty supply store
Ok, well now I'm sardine to have trouble coming up with more nautical puns. They do anything for you? Turn you on a bit? Make ya giggle? No?
In the days after birth, fashion will not be a priority. Hygiene probably won't either. You can bet that I'll be bra-less in an old faded cotton nightgown wearing adult diapers. I reeeeally don't think that's something you all want to see. I decided that before I go on my short blogging maternity leave, I might as well go out with a bang - or more like a tiny pop? I'm linked up for Share-in-Style. This week's theme is "sailor". Yippie!
 SEA YOU LATER!!

it's a record

Yup, I've done it again. I threw my back out for literally the SIXTH time this year. I'm keeping count. This time, I jacked everything up Friday afternoon when I bent down to get River out of his car seat. I swear it happened in slow motion. I could feel it happening but there was nothing I could do about it. Curses!!!! Now I'm back on the couch, just waiting it out. My kitchen is already filthy, laundry is piling up and I'm bored.
So here's what a "just out of boredom" blog post looks like: Enjoy suckers.
***********************************************
Ridiculous selfies at the doctor's office. Yeah, I'm getting pretty lazy with my hair rollers and it shows.
Adorable spontaneous portrait at the doctors office. He's thinking: "When I grow up, will I be weird like my mom? Or weird like my dad?"
Hilarious English translation on some baby leg warmers I ordered online from China.
Only 5 weeks left. I'm stupid excited about the new baby - I'm just not excited about the whole c-section thing. C-sections SUUUUUUUUCK....
Working on my headdress for my "fire gypsy" costume for the faire in October. I've still got a little more to add to it.
Tried out a new "upscale" Chinese buffet. The food was great but I was too busy trying to figure out how to sneak off with this giant shiny Buddha and glittery Luck Cat.
And that's it. Time to go catch up on my blog reading. Yay! Stalking time!

what's that... oh, bye!

It's been pretty slow around here lately. Nothing too spectacular has happened since the 4th of July. Well, I went grocery shopping today and shot a cow with a bazooka. I'm not proud of that last thing but it's something right?
I jacked up my back a couple days ago (for the fifth time this year) so I've been taking it easy. Lounging on the couch, pimping the Faire, selling crap online and I've even been setting up to start my own temp ironing service. Yup- an old fashioned ironing service!! That all gets launched Monday and I'm actually pretty excited about it. I'll do it until the baby comes in September and then pick back up after the Faire in October.
Entire Outfit under $10
Shirt dress (edit: it's actually blue) - recent hand-me-down from aunt
Pink Chucks - Salvation Army
Yellow handkerchief - Wal Mart
Yeah, I know it's a pretty boring outfit, but it's stupid hot outside now. The less I wear the better. I'd go about in a swimsuit like Miss Vix if I could but I'd probably get arrested for indecent exposure with my hairy legs, lumpy butt and cellulite knees. Yes, it's true. I have cellulite down to my knees.

So, why an ironing service?  It's easy, I've already got the fancy equipment, I like money, I'm a fast worker, I can do it from home,  Etsy sales are slow and when I'm done doing faire work the rest of the day is open.... and did I mention I like to make money?
Speaking of Etsy - I'm closing up shop until next year. I'll be relaunching in 2015 with a new shop. No, it's not my "Massy Fassy" fascinator shop. I had to drop that one for personal reasons (er, lack of organization and confidence). I'd like to keep the new store a secret until I launch it, but I'll go ahead give you two clues because I'm SO excited about it - here's goes: Ethnic and textiles...
That's all I'm saying.
There's really not much left in the store but what is left, I don't want to keep it - I don't need it... so you go buy it.
And here's a little bonus fer ya before I go. More about... THE ROLLAHS. I've been using these long bendy foam rollers for a few weeks now and I'm just plumb addicted to them. A couple post ago you saw the end results but not the process, so here:
I sleep in them...
Take them out...
Finger comb my hair (and makeup magically appears)...
And then wrap it up! Easy, fast and best of all, no more damaging heat styling and boring ponytails.
Give it a try! You'll love it.
*********************************
Yeah, so now I gotta go make dinner. Turkey burgers with colby jack, arugula and chard. Yeah, food time!
FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD TIIIIIIIIIIIME!!!!
